Correcting Aliasing Before the Image Is Recorded
High-resolution DSLR sensors created cameras capable of high-quality video, but their video sampling architectures could also produce visible moiré and false high-frequency detail.
Mosaic Engineering developed camera-specific optical anti-aliasing filters that acted in the optical path before sensor sampling and video compression.
The objective was to suppress problematic spatial frequencies optically while retaining useful image resolution.

Removable Filters for DSLR Video
The Nikon VAF systems were precision optical accessories designed for specific camera bodies.
They could be installed in the camera's optical path and removed when not required, providing optical correction before image capture rather than relying solely on post-production filtering.

These systems addressed 1080p and 720p video aliasing while preserving the removable, camera-specific architecture of Mosaic's VAF family.

Nikon filters were part of a broader Mosaic VAF program developed for video and cinematography cameras from several manufacturers.

Precision Optics in a Removable Format
The Nikon filters were more than loose optical elements.
Each system combined the filter with a mechanical frame, protective storage, and dedicated handling tools so the optic could be positioned accurately inside the camera body.
That combination of optical design and camera-specific mechanical integration became increasingly important as Mosaic moved toward engineered solutions for complete imaging systems.

Applying the Technology to Customer Imaging Systems
The next step was not simply another removable filter.
Mosaic began adapting its optical anti-aliasing experience to application-specific imaging systems developed around customer requirements.
A Lumix-based system shown here represents that transition. Rather than treating the anti-aliasing optic only as a retail camera accessory, the optical solution was engineered as part of a larger imaging application.

Prevent Sampling Artifacts Before They Become Recorded Data
The VAF program demonstrated the value of addressing sampling problems in the optical path itself.
Sensor sampling, optical geometry, lens behavior, camera mechanics, and the intended imaging application all influenced the final filter system.
